A five star hotel in Wiltshire with a few secrets... sssh!

Being the magical place that it is, there have been lots of exciting snippets and visits to The Manor House Hotel in Castle Combe, Wiltshire.

Prime Ministers and Celebrity Weddings

Familiar guests of our Castle Combe accommodation include Margaret Thatcher who reportedly sat in The Full Glass Bar and drew inspiration from the peace and views to document her memoirs, David Bowie, HRH Prince Charles and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Plenty of sporting heroes have taken to the championship fairways including World number one Luke Donald, Colin Montgomery, David Howell and Justin Rose, who was so impressed he booked the entire Manor House Hotel exclusively for his wedding reception!

Movie sets

Steven Spielberg's critically acclaimed blockbuster War Horse was filmed in Castle Combe village which lies on our doorstep. Scenes in the film included views of the Market Cross, High street, Hotel entrance and our very own Archway Cottage, making the Manor House Hotel your perfect silver screen setting.

The story begins with Castle Combe doubling for the Dartmoor village where Albert and his trusty stead Joey first meet before being separated by the outbreak of war. Steven Spielberg described how "Castle Combe looks like Hollywood built it. It doesn’t look real but it’s beautiful and really authentic and very old"... great feedback straight from the horses mouth!

Previous blockbusters also filmed here include "Stardust" starring Robert de Niro and Sienna Miller, The Wolf Man starring Anthony Hopkins and the 1960's classic Doctor Dolittle starring Rex Harrison.

Shakespeare inspiration

The site of an old Norman castle settlement, the Manor House has hosted a number of Lords throughout its history, the most famous of which was Sir John Oldcastle, the figure that Shakespeare based his character of Sir John Falstaff upon in his play Henry IV. Honouring our history you will find a few clues around the manor such as the Shakespeare Lounge and Falstaff function suite.
