Tea Award 2010"
Having travelled the country, the judges
awarded points for the variety, excellence and knowledge of the
teas offered, together with the quality of food, service, décor,
ambience, and presentation.
They said:
"the range and quality of
the food on offer was “excellent”, with “appetizing sandwiches” and
“delicious” pastries. The freshly-baked scones were singled out for
special praise as “supreme – light, yet moist and full of flavour”.
With 15 varieties of loose-leaf tea on offer – including speciality
teas – customers are spoilt for choice. The judges were highly
impressed with the standard of service, saying tea was “well
presented and beautifully served”.
Summing up, one judge said:
“The staff knowledge of tea was the best I have
experienced. Bearing in mind the luxury afforded, the high quality
of the tea and the very efficient and willing service we thought it
offered excellent value for money.”

A
quintessential English tradition
Afternoon Tea was not introduced to England until the 1840’s.
Anna Seventh Duchess of Bedford is given credit for beginning the
tradition.
During the long hours between English luncheons and the late
English suppers she would get a sinking feeling. So she would send
to the kitchen to have a pot of water, bread, butter and cakes sent
to her boudoir where she would brew the tea and appease her
appetite. She is said to have shared her ideas with friends and by
the mid 1840’s afternoon tea had become a widespread social
event.
